Running a photography business is much more than just taking photographs. As the photographer and owner of Maria Buhrkuhl Photography, I’m involved in every aspect of the process—from setting up the studio, creating the perfect shot, ensuring that each client has an unforgettable experience from start to finish including beautiful artwork for their home.
The Art of Preparation
Every photoshoot begins long before the client steps in front of the camera. It’s about planning, preparing, and making sure every detail is perfect. As the owner, I take care of pretty much everything — whether it's organising the lighting, choosing backdrops, or ensuring the equipment is ready to go. For outdoor shoots, I scout the best locations ahead of time to find just the right setting that complements the client's vision.
I also work closely with clients before the session to understand their goals. Whether it’s family portraits, couple shoots, or professional headshots, I make sure we’re on the same page about the look and feel they want to capture.
Setting the Scene
For studio shoots, creating the right environment is key. From arranging props to adjusting lighting, I ensure that the studio is a welcoming space where clients feel comfortable and confident. This is especially important when working with families or young children, as a relaxed atmosphere leads to more natural, authentic images.
I carefully design each setup based on the style and preferences of my clients. Whether we’re going for a minimalist aesthetic or a darker fine-art style backdrop, I make sure the setting reflects their unique personalities.
Capturing the Perfect Moment
Once everything is in place, the real magic begins. During the photoshoot, I guide clients through poses and angles while encouraging them to relax and enjoy the experience. But some of the best photos come from candid moments—laughter, shared glances, and genuine expressions. My job is to make clients feel at ease so these authentic moments shine through.
I also pay close attention to the little details that make a photo stand out—lighting, composition, and timing. A great photo isn’t just about the subject; it’s about capturing the feeling of the moment.
The Creative Process After the Shoot
Once the session is over, the work doesn’t stop. Post-production is where I select the best collection of images and enhance them to make sure they look their best. Editing involves everything from adjusting lighting and contrast to retouching small details and ensuring each image aligns with the overall style my client is looking for. Every image is carefully selected and edited to perfection, reflecting the high standard I uphold for my work.
A Hands-On Approach
As the owner of Maria Buhrkuhl Photography, I take a hands-on approach to every aspect of the business. I don’t just take the photos - a lot of my time is spent in business related administration and marketing, plus all the other crucial things that go with running a business. Along with my small team, I plan, prepare, and execute every detail so my clients don’t have to worry about a thing. I take care of the ordering and production side of the business after I have worked with clients to design finished artworks to suit their style and home decor. My goal is to provide a seamless and enjoyable experience for each person I work with, ensuring that their time in front of the camera is fun and their ordering process is stress-free.
